Memory Persistence and Mental Health

How the computations that make memories sticky can go awry in memory loss and psychiatric disorders.

Why do some experiences become lasting memories while others fade? We investigate the mental computations — in entorhinal cortex, hippocampus, amygdala, and beyond — that encode, strengthen, and retrieve memories.

When these mechanisms fail, the consequences range from memory loss to psychiatric illness. Current projects examine grid-like representations of emotion space, amygdala-hippocampal enhancement of emotional memory, and how affect modulates what we remember — with the goal of understanding memory stickiness in health and disease.
